The modern technique, called hot stamping, was first conceived in the late 19th century. Today, it is used to create visual interest and increase the perceived value of a product. Foils are color-coated films that are applied to products through a process called hot stamping. Pigments are placed on a transparent film, which acts as a vehicle to transfer the color to the product. Another layer of foil consists of a pigmented deposit, and a third layer is a heat-activated adhesive that sticks the deposit to the product. It works best with smooth, even-surfaced stock compared to textured or lining materials.

Depending on your substrate and the type of finish you want, you can choose from one of the four hot stamping techniques discussed below:

Flat foil stamping, is a simple, economical process, of copper or magnesium metal stamping to transfer foil to a substrate. It achieves a foil design that is relatively raised from the surface.

Vertical foil stamping, stamping foil designs on flat substrates and cylindrical areas.

Engraved foil stamping, which uses a brass die to achieve a raised image for a crisp engraved look.

Peripheral foil stamping, where foil heat transfer is applied to the outer perimeter of the product - spanning the entire circumference.

Gold and silver are often used to create a luxurious effect.

Available in a variety of finishes such as gloss, matte, metallic, holographic glitter and woodgrain.
