If you've been using yarn for your craft and hobby for a while, you've probably noticed that yarn is made from a variety of materials. These materials include wool, cotton, nylon, acrylic, bamboo fiber, banana fiber, and silk. Among them, maybe you have a favorite yarn, you like its texture and feel, but did you consider the environment when choosing yarn? Did you know that natural yarns have a very different impact on the planet than synthetic yarns? While we believe all kinds of yarns have their place in the world of fiber art, we encourage our blog readers and customers to choose as many yarns as possible from natural fibers.

Natural yarn refers to the type of yarn made from fibers that are naturally present in the environment. These fibers include wool, cotton, silk, bamboo fibers, and banana fibers. Since these yarns do not contain synthetic materials, there is no negative impact on the environment to manufacture them. They are often hand-spun from natural base fibers, requiring no factories or fuel. After being discarded, natural yarns biodegrade in as little as 5 months. (Wool is an exception, because of its density, it takes up to 50 years to biodegrade). Plus, because they're plastic-free, natural yarns are more heat-resistant, which makes them better for insulation pads and other items that will be used near a fire or oven.

Natural yarns are actually more beneficial to human health than acrylic yarns. Many acrylic yarns actually contain carcinogens that can be absorbed through the skin when the yarn is worn. Natural yarns do not contain such harmful chemicals. (Although in some cases wool and cotton yarn do cause adverse skin reactions due to individual allergies.)
