What are Absorption Chillers?

Absorption chillers are highly efficient cooling systems that use a thermal energy source like natural gas, propane, steam or hot water to produce chilled water for air conditioning and refrigeration. Unlike conventional vapor compression chillers that use electricity to power a compressor, they are powered by a thermal energy source. This allows them to leverage lower-cost fuels to produce cooling without using expensive electricity.

How do It Work?
it use a thermal energy source to drive a chemical process similar to the natural water cycle. In it, a refrigerant such as water is absorbed into a liquid absorbent such as lithium bromide. This produces a chilled solution. The refrigerant is then extracted from the chilled solution and vaporized by the heat source, producing a cold vapor. This cold vapor then condenses and expands, producing chilled water for building cooling or process use. The absorbent is regenerated by removing the refrigerant vapor, completing the thermal driven cooling cycle.

Advantages of Absorption Cooling
- Lower Operating Costs: By using fuels like natural gas or recovered heat instead of electricity to power compressors, it offer far lower operating costs compared to electric compression chillers. This makes them ideal for large cooling applications.

- Carbon Footprint Reduction: Absorption Chillers reduce the carbon footprint of cooling by displacing electricity use with lower emission thermal sources. They are one of the most environmentally friendly HVAC options available.

- Fuel Flexibility: Absorption systems can use a variety of fuels including natural gas, propane, biogas, geothermal or solar thermal energy. This provides more sustainable and cost effective cooling options.

- Wider Range of Applications: Due to their ability to leverage relatively low temperature heat sources, itopen up opportunities for cooling applications not accessible to electric chillers like waste heat recovery and solar cooling.
