In the last decade, solar and other renewable energy forms have become the hottest topic in the energy sector. Technology is advancing at a rapid rate, and with that, prices are going down as more competition enters the market. One of the biggest players has always been Tesla, and they’re still innovating today.

So, we’ve already got solar panels, inverters, battery storage solutions, and electric vehicles becoming more common. But now, Tesla has developed solar roofs, or more specifically, solar roof tiles. Here’s how it all works.

What are solar roofs?

In very simple terms, the idea is to use a number of smaller solar tiles to cover your roof, rather than installing separate solar panels. In a way, it makes sense. Everybody needs a roof, and people also want solar. Why not combine the two?

These smaller solar roof tiles can be fitted to your home in basically any style you like, and Tesla already offers a few different types including Tuscan glass, slate glass, textured glass and smooth glass.

It’s important to note that the entire roof is not usually covered in active solar panels, as this would really be overkill. But to preserve the appearance of a solar roof, about 35% of the tiles are active solar, while the rest are non-active solar tiles.

Can you get solar roof tiles in Australia?

Tesla’s solar roof tiles are available in Australia, however, the price may turn away a few customers. Ideally, these tiles, while functional, are aimed at high-end buyers who want the solar roof aesthetic. In fact, many could argue that the cost simply isn’t worth it right now, compared to installing regular solar panels and reaping the same benefits for a fraction of the cost.

Are solar tiles really new?

Well, Tesla’s solar tiles are new. But similar technology has been around for a while, with a few companies already offering building integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs). While not as flashy as Tesla’s solar roof, BIPVs are already being actively used in Australia, and the technology is already improving.

While solar tiles are a great option when solar panels can’t be installed for some reason, they are still generally considered a high-end product, and some people have doubts about the quality. Since they are remarkably different from traditional roof materials, the risk of water ingress and the initial cost may make some homeowners think twice.
