Survival Suits: Protecting Lives in Harsh Environments
Types
There are different types of survival suits designed for various hazardous conditions. Some of the main types include:
Immersion Suits
Immersion suits are designed to help keep a person alive in cold water for extended periods of time. They are worn over regular clothing to provide thermal insulation and buoyancy. Immersion suits trap a layer of water to help prevent heat loss, while also providing flotation to keep the wearer right side up. These suits allow freedom of arm movement and are typically bright orange for high visibility. They may have integrated flotation bags, locator lights, and grab bags for survival gear. Immersion suits are ideal survival gear for occupations like commercial fishing, offshore oil rigs, and merchant shipping.
Exposure Suits
Exposure or cold weather Survival Suits are designed to keep the wearer alive in very cold air temperatures. They provide full body coverage made from breathable, waterproof, and insulated fabrics. The advanced materials trap body heat while repelling moisture from condensation or precipitation. Exposure suits may have integrated boots, insulated hoods, face masks, and gloves for complete protection. They allow full mobility for activities like skiing, snowmobiling, mountaineering, and Arctic/Antarctic exploration. Exposure suits are essential survival gear for remote winter operations.
Space Suits
Space suits, sometimes called EVA (extra-vehicular activity) suits, are high-tech survival suits designed to protect astronauts during spacewalks and exploration outside a spacecraft. The rigid pressure shells and multiple insulating layers maintain a stable atmosphere and thermally regulate body temperature in the extreme environment of outer space. Advanced life support systems recycling breathing gases and removing carbon dioxide are integrated with the suit. Space suits have integrated communications, lights, tools, maneuvering units, and visors for seeing tasks. They allow full range of motion while providing protection from temperatures ranging from -250°F to 250°F as well as micrometeoroids and other hazards. Space suits are crucial for human exploration of the moon and Mars.
