How can you change your fatty liver into a healthy liver?

Fatty liver is a widespread disease that builds up fat inside the liver. Under normal conditions, it may not cause serious problems, but it can give rise to some severe health problems if left untreated. On a positive note, a fatty liver can be reversed through some changes in your lifestyle. Making the right changes at the right time will transform a fatty liver into a healthy one in no time. 

What is fatty liver? 

Fatty liver results when the accumulation of fat in the liver cells is too excessive, thereby decreasing the functioning ability of the liver. These are the two common fatty liver disease types - 

  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): This happens to people who drink very little or no alcohol. It is mostly related to conditions like obesity, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes. 
  • Alcohol-mediated steatosis in the liver: This condition results from excessive use of alcohol and leads to fat accumulation in the liver. 

Both can cause inflammation, scarring, and cirrhosis if left untreated. However, here are some ways that can reverse a fatty liver into a healthy one - 

Exercise regularly 

Physical activity is one of the most perfect ways of melting liver fat. Regular exercise burns excess fat in the liver and elsewhere in your body. Do at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, such as brisk walking, swimming or cycling, for at least five days of the week. 

Reduce weight at a gradual pace  

If you happen to be overweight or obese, losing a little weight can make all the difference in the world to your liver. A modest 5-10% reduction in body weight is enough to bring down liver fat by as much as 30%, leading to a healthy liver. However, you must avoid going on a crash diet since extreme loss of weight can actually worsen liver conditions. 

Regulate blood sugar and cholesterol 

Blood sugar and cholesterol are two of the major reasons that cause fatty liver diseases. Maintaining blood sugar and cholesterol helps in reducing fat in the liver. If you have diabetes or even pre-diabetes, it is of prime importance to control blood sugar levels through a proper diet and exercise, besides medication. Avoid foods and drinks with high sugar; eat balanced meals that would stabilise the blood sugar level. Consume foods low in saturated fats but high in fibre to help lower cholesterol levels.  

Undergo regular checkups  

The health progress of the liver is usually checked through follow-ups and tests by a doctor in clinics. Tests range from blood and ultrasound to liver function, which shows your progress and if your liver is actually healing. Your doctor will also be able to prescribe medication or supplements as needed to build your liver health.

You can reverse a fatty liver simply by bringing appropriate changes in your way of life. All the things mentioned above not only help in the healing of your liver but also contribute to the betterment of your health.
