Polyoxymethylene (POM), also known as acetal or polyacetal, is a thermoplastic polymer with relatively high strength, rigidity and toughness. It was first synthesized in the 1920s and emerged as an engineering polymer in the 1950s. POM is produced by the ring-opening polymerization of formaldehyde. The repeating unit is (-CH2-O-)n, giving it the chemical formula (C2H4O)n.

Medical Polyoxymethylene has a highly crystalline structure which contributes to its desirable mechanical properties. It has a density of 1.42 g/cm3 and crystal melting point of 165–180°C. POM has low moisture absorption, is self-lubricating and resistant to thermal degradation. It is highly resistant to mineral oils, gasoline, solvents and aqueous solutions of inorganic salts. However, POM is prone to degradation when exposed to acids, alkalis and some esters. It is non-toxic and approved for food contact applications by FDA and EU regulations.
