Vitiligo is a condition in which white-pale patches develop on the skin. It is a long-term condition that can affect any part of the body, along with the scalp and inside the mouth. The size and form of these patches can be different for different people. According to the latest research, India has the highest prevalence of vitiligo, at about 8.8%. (1)

Although vitiligo is a serious skin disorder that can hamper one’s quality of life, there are some treatments available that can help in improving the condition. In this blog, Dr. Nivedita Dadu, the Best Skin Specialist In Delhi, talks about the causes, symptoms, and treatment of vitiligo. Continue reading to find out more.

Causes of Vitiligo

Vitiligo is caused when the colour producing cells of the body (melanocytes) stop producing the pigment known as melanin. This leads to a loss of color in the skin. Researchers are still trying to determine the exact cause of vitiligo. Here are some possible causes:

  • Genetics: If someone in the genetics has vitiligo, there are high chances that someone from the next generation will have it too.

  • Autoimmune reaction: When the body’s immune system attacks its own healthy cells, it is called an autoimmune reaction. This reaction can possibly cause vitiligo.

  • Oxidative stress: Exposure to too much oxidative stress can also lead to vitiligo.

  • Environmental factors: In some cases, environmental factors like chemical reactions, sun exposure, or even mental distress can also cause vitiligo.

  • Health conditions: Some health conditions can increase one’s risk of having vitiligo. These include type 1 diabetes, lupus, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and alopecia areata.

Symptoms of Vitiligo

The symptoms of vitiligo are quite evident and do not require a diagnosis in most cases. These include :

  • Loss of skin color in patches

  • Premature gray hair and white patches on the scalp

  • Loss of color of the inner tissue lining of the mouth.

Treatment of Vitiligo

The treatment of vitiligo at Dadu Medical Centre, Skin Clinic In Delhi aims to restore the functioning of melanocytes. These treatments include:

  • Phototherapy: UVA and UVB rays are used in this treatment to restore the color of the skin.

  • Topical creams: This treatment uses vitamin D, calcium nephron inhibitors, and steroidal creams to reduce the symptoms of vitiligo.

  • PUVA treatment: For PUVA treatment, UVA light is combined with some medication to restore the color of the skin.

Vitiligo is not a life-threatening disorder, but it can lead to mental distress and social stigmatization. In such cases, it is advised to visit a dermatologist as soon as possible. Anyone suffering with the condition can consult Dr. Nivedita Dadu, the best skin specialist in Delhi, who puts all her energy into making the condition better for her patients.
