Felmyst, a private World of Warcraft server WoTLK Gold developed by players and designed to emulate Blizzard's MMO which was launched in 2007. when its Burning Crusade expansion launched, was shut down. The server launched on July 21 but was shut down just a few hours later.
Gummy52 the developer on the project, has posted an image of a cease & desist email issued by Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP an attorney firm that represents World of Warcraft developer Blizzard. The letter states that the server was an infringement of Blizzard's intellectual property.
"We understand that through your participation with Felmyst that you are involved with the creation, dissemination and hosting of what is known as 'emulated server software (hereafter"Infringing Services")," ),'" this letter reads. "Among other things, [these] Infringing Services allow users to play altered and/or illegitimate copies of WoW online [without] the need for a legitimately-purchased copy or subscription."
ArsTechnica has more details about the letter, which goes on to affirm that "Blizzard has never authorized andin fact explicitly prohibits any of the activities mentioned."
