Description [provide additional information relevant to your study protocol]
THF (CAS #109-99-9) is a colorless, highly flammable liquid with an ether-like odor detectable at concentrations as low as 4 ppm (odor threshold).how flammable is thf
In industry, it is mainly used as a solvent for various polymers and resins, and also used in rubber production, cellophane, adhesives, tapes and printing inks. Also an industrial solvent for polyvinyl chloride, used for degreasing varnishes and metal parts. It is a medium polar solvent that can dissolve a wide variety of nonpolar and polar compounds.
THF is commonly used in polymer science, for example, to dissolve polymers prior to determining their molecular weight using gel permeation chromatography, and as a component of the mobile phase in reversed-phase liquid chromatography. THF is a commonly used solvent when a moderately high boiling ethereal solvent is required and its miscibility with water is not an issue.
This standard operating procedure (SOP) outlines the handling and use of THF. Review this file and provide the required information to make it specific to your lab. According to this document, laboratories should use appropriate controls, personal protective equipment, and disposal techniques when handling THF. Also, refer to the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Peroxide-Forming Materials SOP.
Synonyms include: divinyl oxide; 1,4-epoxybutane; tetramethylene oxide; tetrahydrofuran; oxolane.
THF is highly flammable. Its vapors can travel great distances through the air to the source of ignition and flash back.
5% THF in water is flammable. THF vapor may form explosive air mixtures at concentrations of 2-12% by volume.
When exposed to air, THF may form explosive peroxides if concentrated by distillation or evaporation. Light may also exacerbate peroxide formation.
THF may react violently with strong oxidizing agents.
THF is a serious eye irritant and skin irritant. Prolonged or repeated eye contact may cause conjunctivitis; prolonged skin contact may cause defatting and dermatitis.
