The Diamond Stitch in crochet gets its name from the appearance of diamonds. The crochet pattern is worked with any of the single-ended crochet hooks in your craft bag. If you have a crochet hook set or Tunisian crochet hooks, use them for practice but make sure they match the yarn weight. Do not attach the interchangeable cord that comes with your hook. The design is made with basic crochet stitches just like most other wonderful stitches. Make sure to work with accessories such as a finishing needle, stitch markers

Grab a skein of your favorite yarn and hook size to match. For smooth crafting, the key is smooth ebony wood crochet hooks. Lantern Moon offers handcrafted hooks in a standard range of sizes. You can explore the Radiance Set for single crochet hooks as well as Bequest Set for Tunisian crochet hooks and cords.

How to Crochet the Diamond Stitch

A four-row repeat stitch pattern, the diamond stitch works with a foundation of single crochet (SC) or double crochet (DC) with a lattice of treble (TR) crochet stitches made with the front post. It is a non-reversible pattern with the RS showing the intricate netting that gives it a unique waffle look

Set up Rows

To begin the stitch pattern, make multiple of 4 chains plus the 3 for the turning chain. You can also begin with a foundation crochet stitch but make sure to add extra 2 chains.

Row 1: You’ll be making the foundation. You can work the single crochet stitch in each chain. Insert your crochet hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull a loop. With the two loops on the hook, yarn over and pull yarn through the loops. If you used a foundation single crochet, skip this row.

Row 2: Make 3 chains for turning the row of DC. Work the double crochet stitch for this row. Insert your crochet hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull a loop. With the two loops on the hook, yarn over and pull yarn through the loops. Once again yarn over and pull yarn through the two loops on your hook.

Row 3: This row involves stitches that are far different than the ones you’ve made before. In this row, you’ll lay the foundation of the lattice that will create the diamond look. FPTC, front post treble crochet stitches will create a diamond-like appearance. You will be working this row in different steps.

Step 1: Make a turning chain. Insert the crochet hook in the third SC from the first row for FPTC. Yarn over twice for TR but skip the stitch and then insert the crochet hook in the third SC. Work three SC stitches which take you to the point where the diamond corners meet.

Step 2: Now you’ll work on a front post treble crochet two together. To do this, yarn over two times and insert your hook through the same single crochet post from the last FPTC. Work the treble crochet up to the point that you have two loops on your hook. Do not complete the TC.

Step 3: Skip the next three single crochets from row one. Yarn over two times and insert your hook around the post of the fourth single crochet. Work the treble crochet up to the point that you have three loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw it through all three loops to complete the FPTC2Tog.

Step 4: Repeat the row 3 steps across the row to the last two stitches. Work an FPTC into the last single crochet you worked an FPTC2Tog around. Single crochet the last stitch.

You will notice a textured V formation that will later become your diamonds.

Row 4: Continue with a row of double crochet stitches.

Row 5: In this row, you will work on the points of the diamond, the inverted V shape to the lattice.

Now continue with these rows 1-5 to the end of the project.

To finish the project smoothly, there are many ways. Choose whatever way suits your project. For the last rows transition the crocheted fabric to single or double crochet stitches. Make sure to weave in the yarn ends with a finishing needle following the steps of the stitch pattern.

The diamond stitch pattern works for dishcloths to the widest blankets. It does take a hang of things. For your first projects make sure to work with a pattern. This way you can focus on the stitches rather than calculating every step. Also, it is recommended to not work with multiple colors or change yarn frequently when you’ve just started with a diamond stitch pattern. If you do not want the textured lattice look a diamond pattern can be created on a swatch with yarn over and decrease stitches. It gives the lace look to the project.

With this tutorial hope you are ready to add textured diamonds.
