Oppo is establishing itself as a dependable Android phone manufacturer for people on a budget. The Oppo A54 5G continues this trend, giving a wide range of capabilities (including 5G support) at a low price so that more of us can benefit from features like 5G, a 90 Hz screen, and a decent primary camera for less.

Of course, there are exceptions. The Oppo A54 5G looks like most other Oppo phones, from the A53 to the Find X3 Neo – decent but not particularly fascinating – and two of the four back cameras are quite poor.

That’s understandable, given the Oppo A54 5G’s low price of $250, which makes it a fantastic value option to get a capable 5G phone.

Price

The Oppo A54 5G is available in Fluid Black or Fantastic Purple color schemes for $250. It’s available via all of the usual third-party vendors, as well as Oppo directly and through certain networks.

It’s too early to predict if we’ll see discounts, but we believe one of these models will prove to be more popular than the other, resulting in price reductions.

Design

Even though its plastic finish belies the fact that this is an inexpensive 5G phone, the Oppo A54 5G feels fantastic in your hand. It’ll still show every fingerprint, but we’re coming to terms with the fact that this is the price you pay for a great finish – and the finish is nice, altering the color as it does in varied light.

The front display is only accented by a little punch-hole for the selfie camera, which is placed deftly in the upper left corner, while the fingerprint sensor is located on the right-hand side of the power button. That’s not as wonderful as having a fingerprint sensor built into the display, but it’s a nicer touch than having it on the phone’s back.

Instead, the only thing visible on the back is the rear camera array. It stands out, but that’s just the nature of the beast, and it’s no worse than any other phone. The Oppo branding is on the back like it is on all Oppo phones, which isn’t particularly elegant but functional.

A headphone jack and a single speaker are located on the bottom of the device. Instead of relying on the phone’s speaker, use headphones here. The Oppo A54 5G has dimensions of 162.9 x 74.7 x 8.4mm and weighs 190 grams. Although it is not a small phone, its design makes it comfortable to hold. It’s well worth it for the screen, which we’ll discuss later.

Water and dust resistance aren’t included, as is typical of inexpensive Oppo phones. So if you live an active (or clumsy) lifestyle, this phone might not be for you, but it’s rather tough in less-than-adventurous conditions.

Display

Even in poor weather and lighting, the Oppo A54 5G display is brilliant and clear. It’s excellent for watching your favorite streaming shows on the go, with a 6.5-inch edge-to-edge display with a 1080 x 2400 resolution that keeps things quite sharp.

A 90Hz or greater refresh rate is something we always seek in new phones, and it makes everything look a little bit smoother than a lower refresh rate. While a 60Hz refresh rate is unlikely to be a deal-breaker, it’s wonderful to have something to brag about at this price.

We didn’t detect any apparent slowness while playing games or watching movies, and we didn’t feel hampered even in hot temperatures. The positioning of the selfie camera on the Oppo A54 5G is another reference to Oppo keeping to the same format with all of its phones. It’s in a punch-hole in the top left corner, neatly out of the way and far from a distraction, as is the company’s custom.

Camera

The main camera of the Oppo A54 5G features a resolution of 48MP and a digital zoom of up to 5x. When it comes to photography, this is the phone’s strongest suit.

An 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth camera are among the other features. While the ultra-wide camera isn’t horrible, the other two aren’t particularly impressive and aren’t worth your time.

On the front, there’s a 16MP selfie camera that’s good enough for selfies and video chats, and both the main and selfie cameras can shoot video at up to 1080p at 30fps.

Simply told, the Oppo A54 5G is an excellent point-and-shoot camera. We went to our local harbor for a major photo shoot, and the primary camera did a great job capturing the water’s definition.

When using an ultra-wide lens, though, some of the definition is lost. When I zoomed in too far, the definition was lost as well. It’s all a balancing act, but at least the photographs were always vivid and vibrant, if not always as crystal clear as we’d want.  Digital zoom at 2x isn’t horrible, but it’s far from flawless; avoid 5x zoom. It’s not shocking, but it loses a lot of sharpness, reminding you why optical zoom reigns supreme (and why you’ll pay for it).

Low-light photographs are also a bit of a mixed bag. The night mode of the Oppo A54 5G isn’t terrible at picking up photographs, but it sometimes concentrates on the wrong sections of the shot, resulting in photos that aren’t always as excellent as you’d want. This is unlikely to be a problem if you’re snapping for the purpose of memories and social media.

The Oppo A54 5G, like previous Oppo phones, features a slew of software choices, including filters and an AI scene enhancement mode that can aid. The latter’s performance is very dependent on the scenery you’re photographing, but it’s entertaining to play about with.

Performance and specs

The Oppo A54 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 480 5G, which is a relatively recent chipset with ample horsepower for this price bracket, but it’s let down by 4GB of RAM. That means it’s not great at multitasking, and heavy-duty games can take a long time to load (like Call of Duty Mobile). However, once it catches up, there isn’t much of a problem.

The Oppo A54 5G runs Android 11 with Oppo’s ColorOS on top, but it’s not overly bloated. So, it’s excellent if you want a streamlined experience that you can personalize. Storage is a tad limited for this pricing at 64GB, but you can always extend it with a microSD card.

Battery life

The Oppo A54 5G has a 5,000mAh battery. Even with intensive use, it easily lasts slightly over a day. However, with only 10W, charging is a little slow, taking roughly 2 hours to complete a full charge. There’s no support for rapid charging here, and it shows.

Wireless charging is also missing, which is less of an issue at this price point, although we do wish the Oppo A54 5G could charge a little faster. On the plus side, if you configure the Android software battery-saving modes appropriately, you shouldn’t have to recharge as frequently as you’d want.
