When the Broncos hired Nathaniel Hackett to be their next head coach last offseason, there was reason to be excited.Hackett, 42, is one of the NFL's youngest coaches. He comes from the Matt LaFleur coaching tree. He helped coach Aaron Rodgers to back-to-back MVP awards in 2020 and 2021 Marlon Davidson Jersey . He was considered to be a great offensive mind who would fix that side of the ball in Denver after the Broncos had i sues scoring last season. But Hackett hasn't improved the offense yet. The Broncos have averaged a league-low 15 points per game and quarterback Ru sell Wilson hasn't even looked like a Pro Bowl talent.Even worse, Hackett's coaching has potentially cost the Broncos a couple of wins. He has made multiple strange calls. One was deciding to kick a 64-yard field goal on fourth-and-5 while trailing in Week 1 while down a point. Another came in Week 5 when he had Wilson throw a risky end-zone pa s late against the Colts with the team positioned for a chip-shot field goal to extend their lead to six. These moves have put the rookie coach immediately under the microscope. Few have liked what they have seen from him and believe he is largely responsible for Denver's slow start. How much trouble has Hackett had in getting the Broncos to play to their talent level in 2022? The Sporting News breaks down his more controversial calls and decisions.MORE: Hackett's coaching debut coincided with Ru sell Wilson's much-anticipated return to Seattle. The Broncos fell flat in a disappointing 17-16 lo s to the Seahawks, and Hackett had a hand in his team's shortcomings with questionable play-calling and time management. Here's what went wrong for Hackett in his first game as Denver's head coach:Brandon McManus' 64-yard field-goal attemptHackett's worst moment had everyone talking after the game. He faced a choice on a fourth-and-5 from Seattle's 46 trailing by one: go for it with Wilson, or have McManus attempt the second-longest field goal in NFL history. The choice should have been easy, or at least Hackett should have made it quickly or used a timeout to stop the clock, which ticked under a minute to play. Instead, he dragged his feet, ran the clock down even though he had all three of his timeouts, and then sent McManus on to kick. For context, McManus was 1 of 8 on kicks from 60-plus yards during his career before his attempt. So the odds of him making a 64-yard Atlanta Falcons Polos attempt were low.Predictably, the kick mi sed despite a valiant effort by the veteran. This close.: on ESPN/ABC: Stream on NFL+ NFL (@NFL) Because the Broncos used a timeout before the field goal attempt, the Seahawks were able to kneel out the clock. Hackett pointle sly used his other two timeouts on the kneeldowns.Hackett initially defended his call, and so did Wilson. A day later, ."Looking back it, we definitely should've gone for it," Hackett told reporters. "One of those things, you look back at it, you say, 'Of course we should go for it. We mi sed the field goal.' In that situation we had a plan . . . we knew the Seahawks' 46 was the mark . . . Javonte Williams makes a move, goes a lot further than I think we had anticipated on the preceding third-down play , we were expecting to go for it on fourth down. And then you hit the mark."That was the No. 1 coaching blunder, but it wasn't the only one.MORE: Delay of game penaltiesHackett's clock management wasn't just poor on Denver's final drive of the game, when he let the clock run down from 1:11 to 20 seconds remaining before calling a timeout. He had trouble with it earlier in the game, and it cost his team penalty yardage. The Broncos frequently had trouble getting lined up during the game. They took two delay of game penalties on plays because of it.The worst sequence took place in the third quarter as the Broncos were driving for a potential NFL Atlanta Falcons Jersey go-ahead score. They had the ball on the Seattle 6 but were called for delay of game on second-and-goal.Denver was still able to get the ball inside the Seattle 1, but it didn't score on the drive because Melvin Gordon fumbled on fourth down. The lost yards and Hackett not calling a timeout before the play clock ran down proved costly.Shotgun runs on the goal lineSpeaking of Gordon's fumble, goal-line runs were Hackett's biggest shortcoming in play-calling.Denver twice had the ball inside the 1 and failed to score. Both times, it opted to run from a shotgun formation. Gordon fumbled on fourth-and-goal and Williams fumbled on third-and-goal.GOAL LINE STAND Julio Jones Jersey . : on ESPN/ABC: Stream on NFL+ NFL (@NFL) ANOTHER goal line fumble forced by the !: on ESPN/ABC: Stream on NFL+ NFL (@NFL) The fumbles weren't Hackett's fault, but running out of the shotgun when inches away from the goal line made little sense, especially the second time. Wilson easily could have run a sneak from well inside the 1.If the Broncos had scored on either of those red-zone trips, they likely would have won the game. That they didn't win was due, in part, to a lack of ball security, but also Hackett's puzzling play-calling. (Getty Images) The Broncos were supposed to bounce back in their home opener against the Texans. The Texans were coming off a Week 1 tie with the Colts. That meant they were coming off a five-quarter game had to play at altitude.Well, Denver was able to win, but it wasn't pretty. It got hardly anything going on offense in the 16-9 victory, with a late touchdown strike from Wilson to tight end Eric Saubert proving to be the difference.Once again, Hackett's coaching came under fire. He didn't have an i sue quite as big as the McManus kick, but there were still some head-scratching sequences. The Broncos were showered with boos as the offense scuffled.Tight end option run on third-and-1With the Broncos trailing 9-6 late in the third quarter, one of the worst sequences of Hackett's young career unfolded.Denver had a third-and-1 at Houston's 35. It had converted on fourth-and-2 earlier in the drive through the air. They were well in McManus' range, so the play call seemed to Atlanta Falcons Home Office be an easy choice: run the ball up the middle. If the offense doesn't get the first down, then decide whether to kick for the tie or go for it again to extend the drive.Hackett didn't do any of those things. Instead, he called a running play where Wilson handed off to Andrew Beck, a tight end/H-back hybrid who was lined up as a fullback in the backfield. Beck proceeded to carry the ball to the outside. He could have pitched it to a trailing running back if he so desired. The Texans contained him with ease. He was tackled for a 1-yard lo s, which brought up a fourth-and-2 from the Texans' 36.Please watch this entire sequence. Nate Hackett has officially lost it. Denver went from 3rd and inches, a TE rush attempt, a long FG attempt, and then a punt. Lord Billy M (@BillyM_91) As questionable as Hackett's play call was in that moment, his next action was even more puzzling and certainly cost the Broncos a chance
