The critique of punctuation is that it hinders the creativity and flow of written text. This theory does not correlate with modern literary trends however, as great works throughout history have relied heavily on poetic use of grammar for writing styles such as stream-of-consciousness, to achieve a richer texture. More complex concepts would be nearly impossible without the aid of punctuation to help guide readers along the way; complex thought patterns in non-fiction require multiple points in order to make an argument or to explain something properly and clearly. These complex concepts are in detailed with example available at essay writer

Grammar punctuation creates a clear distinction between statements and questions through the use of question marks and exclamation points respectively; without this small detail, strong writing can become messy very quickly. In addition, basic punctuation helps writers prove their points through a clear sequence of events and without it, this task will be far more difficult. All in all, grammar punctuation is important to the presentation of written language as we know it; without these small marks separating out words that are separate sentences (and thus separate thoughts) writing could become very difficult to read and follow along with.

The following table breaks down what the purpose for the different types of punctuations are:

1) Comma:

The comma is used to separate ideas or information that are related but not part of the same idea. For example, when someone is writing about a list of items he bought at the grocery store, commas can be used to seperate each item from the one before and after it. The following sentence contains no commas: “I bought some bread, apples, milk, bananas and oranges”. This sentence could use a comma between ‘bread’ and ‘apples’ because they do not belong together in this scenario; there is nothing wrong with buying bread and apples at the same time but these items were probably purchased separately on different shopping trips. This is a much better way to write the sentence: “I bought some bread, apples and milk”. This sentence conveys the same meaning as the first one but it can be read easier; there is no confusion between what items were purchased at which store or when they were purchased. The list can also continue to include commas between all of the other listed items if needed.

2) Colon:

A colon separates two sentences or ideas that have something in common however, only one of them will follow the colon (which gives a very brief definition of whatever follows). One example could be to use a colon after listing several different types of animals saying ‘he ate an animal from each category’ to follow up with another statement about how you cannot eat every animal on the planet. This could also be used before a list of items as well, and it is often preceded by the word ‘here’ to indicate that something will follow the colon that elaborates on what was just written.

3) Semicolon: A semicolon is used when two separate sentences could stand alone but are related in some way; they need each other to make sense though they do not have anything in common like the use of colons in explanation. If this were written out without a semicolon, there would be two independent clauses describing how snakes eat their prey. The first statement says, “snakes eat their prey whole” and then underneath it reads, “they begin absorbing the nutrients immediately”. Both of these sentences could stand on their own as ideas in a paragraph but it would be very confusing to the reader (unless the reader already knew what kind of snake was being described). By using a semicolon, it is possible to seperate out two related ideas and still give an illustration of each one: “snakes eat their prey whole; they begin absorbing the nutrients immediately.” This sentence shows that snakes consume their prey whole while also showing how quickly they digest them because they begin absorbing nutrients immediately after consuming their food.
