3) Semicolon: A semicolon is used when two separate sentences could stand alone but are related in some way; they need each other to make sense though they do not have anything in common like the use of colons in explanation. If this were written out without a semicolon, there would be two independent clauses describing how snakes eat their prey. The first statement says, “snakes eat their prey whole” and then underneath it reads, “they begin absorbing the nutrients immediately”.
