Aspiration is another potentially life-threatening complication of ETTs. It occurs when stomach contents enter the lungs due to a malfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter or improper placement of the ETT. Aspiration can lead to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and sepsis. Prevention measures include maintaining the head of the bed elevated, regular suctioning of the ETT, and proper selection of the Endotracheal Tube size. Respiratory distress can occur due to factors such as airway obstruction, tube displacement, or inadequate ventilation. Prompt recognition and intervention are critical to prevent hypoxia and cardiac arrest. The ETT should be checked for proper placement and secured with a padded holder to prevent airway obstruction. Adequate oxygenation and ventilation should be ensured with supplemental oxygen and mechanical ventilation if necessary.
