An Artificial Retina for accelerated detection
Results of the first real-time embedded tracking system with an artificial retina during test beams. The test beam results of the first embedded real-time tracking system based on an Artificial Retina algorithm are presented. The tracking system prototype can quickly rebuild the track with a response latency of less than 1 s and track parameter resolutions that are comparable to the results from offline experiments. The hardware implementation of the method was done on a special data acquisition board built on a commercial FPGA. With a maximum track rate of about 280 kHz and a 180 Ge V/c proton beam at the CERN SPS, the system was successfully tested. The simulated reaction and the online track parameters were found to be in good agreement.
