Diablo 4 Allows the Campaign to Be Skipped, With a Catch
Blizzard confirms that Diablo 4 players may have the choice to skip the ARPG's campaign when they want to, there is however a catch.
Blizzard has officially confirmed the Diablo 4 campaign could be skipped, there is however a catch. The latest video shared by Blizzard's Diablo 4 social networking team reveals that players can select a choice to "Skip Campaign" when designing a new character. That will allow Diablo 4 players to leap directly into the highly-anticipated ARPG's endgame activities. It isn't a choice that will be available immediately, however. Players will have to earn the option.
Campaigns in past Diablo games happen to be inexorably intertwined with progression. In both the initial Diablo and Diablo 2, for instance, progression relied entirely on players completing the storyline and then repeating key encounters in the campaign for loot. Diablo 3's Reaper of Souls expansion changed this technique, however, allowing those playing the game's seasonal content to jump straight into Adventure Mode. That's an open-play mode without any requirement to experience Diablo 3's story.
Outside of seasonal play, players must complete Diablo 3's Story Mode campaign before unlocking Adventure Mode. That's now confirmed to also be Blizzard's option for the ability to skip Diablo 4's campaign. A screen capture from the recent Diablo 4 video revealed the presence of a Skip Campaign button in character creation. Blizzard global community development director Adam Fletcher noticed fans were referring to skipping Diablo 4's campaign and clarified that players, "Gotta beat the campaign once with this."
Exact details concerning the Skip Campaign functionality aren't yet available, unfortunately. While Diablo 4 doesn't create a distinction between Story Mode and Adventure Mode, being set free within the game's open world with no structured story driving the action likely has some changes when compared with normal. The main campaign missions might be absent, however, it isn't clear if side-quests or another type will also be skipped.
Another major real question is whether this decision will carry over to Diablo 4's seasonal content. Diablo 3 allows players to dive directly into progression each season, but Diablo 4 may task players with completing the campaign first. Blizzard has previously said hello and will add new story-based content each season perhaps to introduce seasonal feature additions, but nothing concerning the campaign itself.
There's still much for Blizzard to explore before Diablo 4's launch, but this is still a thrilling confirmation. Players will not be forced to replay Diablo 4's story with new characters after they've already completed it. Progression and endgame aren't wholly intertwined with Diablo 4's story. It's going to be interesting to determine what Blizzard does use the freedom this may provide players.
