Honkai Star Rail launched at the end of April, which means you have only a few days to assert the first batch of free monthly pulls from the in-game store.

Just like Genshin Impact, developer Hoyoverse's previous game, Honkai Star Rail lets players purchase five standard pulls and five limited pulls every month using a free currency. In this case, you can purchase five Star Rail Passes and five Star Rail Special Passes while using embers you accumulate by pulling on any banner. You'll find this freebie passes underneath the "Embers Exchange" tab from the in-game store.

Each of those passes costs 90 embers, and that means you have until the end of April to scrounge up 900 embers. Fortunately, between launch rewards and new-player bonuses, Honkai Star Rail provides you with more than enough passes to obtain these embers.

Pulling any weapon or character on any banner (Warp) will automatically reward you with embers, therefore it doesn't matter in which you spend your pulls. That said, I recommend you first make use of your normal passes cleaning the 50 discounted pulls around the Departure Warp banner, and assuming you won't want to save your Special passes, I'd spend them around the Seele character banner because the alternatives are less impactful.

For reference, I've only played for a little over an hour or so and I've been in a position to buy nine of April's 10 free passes. So far, I've spent an overall total of 40 pulls around the beginner banner and 10 around the limited-time Seele banner. I'm only Trailblazer level six, therefore if nothing else, once I hit level 15 I'll get another 10 standard passes that will give me enough embers to purchase the last free pass for April. Going forward, it is best to try to keep a minimum of 900 embers in reserve so you can purchase all the free passes each month. I'll probably attempt to stay above 1,800 in case I wind up going several updates without having done a large number of pulls. That said, you shouldn't be afraid to invest a huge more than embers around the character materials that are also available via Embers Exchange.
