1. Introduction to Gemstone Mining in India
India is one of the oldest sources of gemstones in the world and has a rich history of producing a wide variety of precious and semi-precious stones. From ancient times, Indian gemstones were prized globally and traded across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The country’s diverse geology and mineral-rich landscapes make it an ideal location for gemstone formation. Different regions of India are known for specific types of stones, ranging from rubies and sapphires to emeralds, garnets, and moonstones. Many of these deposits are located in the states of Rajasthan, Odisha, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, each contributing significantly to India’s gemstone industry.

2. Rajasthan – The Land of Garnets and Emeralds
Rajasthan, particularly in districts like Ajmer, Jaipur, and Udaipur, is a major hub for gemstone mining and trade in India. The state is rich in garnets, aquamarine, rock crystal, and agate. The area around Ajmer and Bhilwara is known for high-quality garnets, while emeralds are found in the regions surrounding Udaipur and Rajsamand. Jaipur, the capital city, is one of the largest centers for gemstone cutting and polishing in the world Certified 100% Natural Gemstones. Even if stones are mined in other states, they often find their way to Jaipur for processing. The skilled artisans of Jaipur have helped establish the city as a global gemstone hub.

3. Odisha – The Source of Cat’s Eye and Alexandrite
Odisha (formerly Orissa) is another important state when it comes to gemstone mining. The state is known for producing unique and rare gemstones like cat’s eye (chrysoberyl) and alexandrite, which is famous for its color-changing properties. These stones are mainly found in the regions around Rayagada and Kalahandi. Odisha also has reserves of ruby, garnet, and zircon. The region’s rich mineral resources have drawn attention from both local and international buyers. Although much of the mining is done on a smaller scale, Odisha remains an important contributor to India’s gemstone reserves.

4. Karnataka – The Home of Corundum and Sapphires
Karnataka, particularly the districts of Bellary, Chitradurga, and Mysore, is known for its deposits of corundum, which includes both rubies and sapphires. Some of the finest blue sapphires and star sapphires have been unearthed from this region. Apart from these, the state also produces beryl (which includes emeralds), garnet, and aquamarine. Karnataka’s gemstone deposits are generally found in the pegmatite veins and metamorphic rocks that characterize the region’s geological composition. The state has both licensed mining operations and artisanal miners who extract gemstones using traditional techniques passed down through generations.

5. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana – Ruby and Quartz Mining
The twin states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana also have notable gemstone resources. Corundum deposits, including rubies and sapphires, are found in the Anantapur and Kurnool districts of Andhra Pradesh. These regions are rich in metamorphic rocks that are conducive to the formation of high-quality gemstones. Telangana is known for its quartz crystals, agates, and garnets. While large-scale gemstone mining is not as widespread in these states compared to Rajasthan or Karnataka, the quality and variety of stones found here make them valuable contributors to India’s gem industry.

6. Tamil Nadu and Other Regions – Variety of Semi-Precious Stones
Tamil Nadu is rich in deposits of moonstone, garnet, and zircon. The districts of Tirunelveli and Coimbatore are particularly known for their semi-precious gemstone deposits. In addition, the state of Kerala has also reported occurrences of beryl and other pegmatite-hosted gemstones. Beyond the southern states, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir in the north have deposits of tourmaline and aquamarine found in the Himalayan ranges. Overall, India’s varied geography—ranging from the Deccan Plateau to the Himalayas—contributes to its wealth of gemstone varieties, making it a treasure trove for both gem lovers and commercial buyers worldwide.
