Diablo 4's Launch is Going to be a Neck and Neck Race Between Two Classes
With the imminent release of Diablo 4, many fans are excitedly planning build-ups around one of the game's five classes that will be present at launch. Between Barbarian, Rogue, Sorcerer, Necromancer, and Druid, it's likely that players will be able to find a class that suits their preferred style of play on launch day. The beta for Diablo IV has given players a pretty good look at what to expect from each of these classes, but it's become clear that Necromancer and Sorcerer are likely to be the most popular of the bunch.
Diablo 4's classes are a good mix of series staples that have been updated with new mechanics to reflect the skill tree system that forms the basis of the game's build customization options. Players were given the chance to see them in action during the Server Slam beta, complete with balance tweaks following feedback from the first beta. After experiencing each class in the state closest to where they will be at the launch of Diablo 4, Necromancer and Sorcerer proved to be the most powerful, making it likely that a large percentage of players will choose these classes on release day.

Diablo 4's Sorcerer class has been a standout since the first beta, so much so that the class received a nerf for its strongest skill heading into Server Slam beta. However, even with this nerf, the Sorcerer is still a top-tier class, thanks to their high damage potential and combination of strong range and melee abilities. Additionally, the Sorcerer's unique Enchantment mechanic allows them to swap active skills into the Enchantment slot to provide a variety of useful passive effects. That means the class will end up with some of the most complex build combinations available for players to explore on launch day.
As powerful as the Sorcerer is, Diablo IV's Necromancer gives the class a serious run for its money, despite receiving its own set of nerfs. Not only do Necromancers have fantastic damage options with skills such as the iconic Bone Spear, but their Blood skill drains enemies' health while restoring the Necromancer's own, allowing them to survive much longer. On top of this, Necromancers can essentially be their own entire party, with the ability to summon minions such as Skeletal Warriors, Skeletal Mages, and Golems, making the class essentially capable of playing each necessary role on its own.
The Necromancer may be slightly disadvantaged over the Sorcerer, as some of the nerfs implemented between betas hit their minions a little too hard. Although Blizzard deployed a hotfix during Server Slam to help balance the Necromancer minions in Diablo 4, they are still not as powerful as they were during the first beta. Regardless of the status of their minions, the other skills the Necromancer has access to are strong enough to make it a class that players will want to flock to when Diablo 4 boots up.
Even though the Sorcerer's over-powered Chain Lightning skill was needed prior to the Server Slam beta, Diablo IV's Sorcerer still has the Enchantment mechanic that gives it a strong edge over other classes. With the Necromancer acting as the only real competition to the power of the Sorcerer, the title of the most popular class at launch is either up for grabs. While other classes such as Barbarian, Rogue, and Druid will likely have their niches, the Sorcerer and Necromancer are strong enough in their skills that they are likely to be able to carry the player through Diablo 4's endgame without too much reliance on specific gear investments.
