What You Need To Know About Colic in Babies?

All babies cry, but some cry more than others. Healthy newborns start crying more around the age of two weeks, and crying gradually peaks at six weeks and slowly improves. When a healthy baby cries for more than three hours every day, and at least three times a week, it can be a sign of colic. As per a Pediatrician in Delhi, colic usually begins at about two to three weeks of age and may last till the baby reaches three to four months of age.

What Causes Colic?

The cause of colic is still under research. Probably can be caused due to factors like gas, stomach spasms, an immature digestive or nervous system, and even exposure to smoke. Also, colic is not caused by parental behavior; it is not caused by parental behaviour or lack of care, and it does not mean your baby is unwell.

Signs and Symptoms of Colic

Excessive crying, which remains unsoothed through usual comforting measures, is the main symptom of colic. During colic episodes, babies may-

  • Flail their arms and legs

  • Clench their fists

  • Arch their back

  • Draw their legs up toward their belly

  • They may appear restless or angry when held.

  • Most of these episodes occur late afternoon into the evening, and bring great stress for the parents/families.

Ways to Help

There are many ways to attempt to ease the suffering in babies-

  • Try gentle rocking in a stroller

  • Burp your baby often during feeds to reduce gas

  • Avoid overfeeding; feed them in small, frequent amounts

  • Hold your little one upright or on his left side for digestion

  • Provide soothing sounds like white noise or gentle humming

  • Give the pacifier; sucking helps calm many babies.

Things To Take Care Of

Constant crying can be very stressful. Whenever you (parent or caregiver) feel stressed, place your baby safely in their crib and take a short break. Never shake your baby, as it can cause serious brain injury, known as Abusive Head Trauma.

Call a Doctor

It's very important to get medical attention when your baby has those additional symptoms, such as fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, or cannot gain weight well, or even blood in stool; those would be signs of possible other conditions that require medical care.

If your child is showing persistent signs of colic or you are concerned about your child health, consult a General Pediatrician in South Delhi, Dr. Promilla Butani, who may help you with colic and rule out other health issues.
