Design
The exterior of the new "Game Station" for a long time remained the subject of numerous rumours. But on 11 June Sony fully revealed the exterior of the console, which turned out to be not in exemplary refinement of what the competitors presented. True, evil tongues compare the design of the PS5 with an air purifier, but such criticism is a minority.
PlayStation 5 became the largest game console in history. Dimensions of the console even without a stand is 390 x 104 x 260 mm. Even the version without a disc drive gives a saving of only 12 mm. The weight of the consoles has also increased - 4.5 and 3.9 kg, depending on the version. Interestingly, the PS4 barely weighed just over 2kg.
Specifications
Although the design of the PlayStation 5 is very different from the new Xbox, the specifications of the consoles are closer than ever. The PS5 is powered by an AMD Zen 2 eight-core processor clocked at 3.5GHz. The GPU is also based on AMD developments - RDNA 2 clocked up to 2.23GHz and with a performance of 10.3 teraflops. RAM fast standard GDDR6 RAM here is 16 GB. Regardless of the version, the SSD storage capacity is 825 GB. It is made by the fastest NVMe technology (I wonder how the cooling problem is solved). Thanks to this, you can load 2GB of data in 0.27 seconds, which means that gaming worlds will switch not quickly, but very quickly. As mentioned above, Sony will release two versions of the console. The main variant will get a 4K UHD Blu-ray Drive, while the Digital Edition set-top box will be without it. Note that technically it is completely identical to the older version, which means there will be no cutbacks here, which is what the Xbox Series S has. If you look at the console in disassembly, you can notice a unique cooling system. The device is equipped with a small heatsink and two fans on either side of the board.
In a thread dedicated to next-gen consoles, the PS5 is shown disassembled, where the unit has a small heatsink and two fans on either side of the board. The visible part seems flimsy, but the one on the other side of the board surely provides the necessary power. The developers describe the new cooling system as "heat conduction circuits running through the PCB". They also promise quietness in the console's operation.
By the way, the more info PlayStation 5 will support 99 per cent of previous generation games. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan admitted as much.
