Dogs and their people are virtually inseparable, especially when they’re together at home. So, when your dog’s sweet puppy smell is replaced with what can only be described as a funk, something may be wrong with him.

If you’ve noticed that your pup smells a little more stinky than usual, there are a few things you can do to help him regain his good odor. A simple bath will usually remove any surface odors, but if the funk persists, it’s important to investigate further. Check your dog’s nose, ears, paw pads and skin for clues as to the cause of his strange smell.

Ear infections can produce an unpleasant odor, especially in dogs with long ears. You can help reduce ear infections by using a special shampoo for smelly dogs that contains an odour neutraliser. Regular ear cleaning with cotton swabs will also prevent infection.

Bad breath is another common source of a pet’s odd odor. Sticky plaque and tartar build-up on the teeth can release a pungent odour when it’s brushed away. Brushing your dog’s teeth daily, and especially after meals will keep his teeth healthy and eliminate any odours from the mouth. For more details please visit The Stinky Dog

Flatulence can often be caused by your dog eating something he’s allergic to, such as moldy food, rotten vegetables or raw meat. These foods often contain fatty acids and other toxins that can produce a foul odour in your dog’s gastrointestinal tract.

Smelly anal glands are also a sign of an underlying health problem. Two small glands on either side of your dog’s rectum can secrete a thin, fish-like odour when the glands are infected or impacted. If your dog is licking his rear end excessively or scooting around the floor, he may need his anal glands manually expressed by a veterinarian.

Odors can be caused by a number of conditions, including diabetes and certain tumours, as well as metabolic diseases like kidney disease and liver failure, explains Dr Kari Murdoch. Your veterinarian will be able to diagnose and treat the problem, making sure your furry friend is a happy, healthy and fragrant pooch once again.

Regular grooming, proper diet, a healthy diet, and regular or medicated baths will all help keep your stinky dog smelling fresh and clean. If you suspect your dog has an odour that isn’t being eliminated with bathing and ear cleaning, contact your veterinarian for a thorough examination. An ounce of prevention is definitely worth a pound of cure.
