Silicone elastomers, also known as silicone rubbers, are versatile synthetic polymers that have gained widespread usage in various industries due to their unique properties. In this article, we will explore the characteristics and applications of these useful materials.

What are Silicone Elastomers?
Silicone elastomers belong to a class of polymers called silicone polymers, which are made through the polymerization of siloxane monomers. They have a backbone structure of alternating silicon and oxygen atoms, along with organic side chains attached to the silicon atoms via silicon-carbon bonds. This hybrid organic-inorganic structure gives silicone elastomers their distinct properties.

Key Properties of Silicone Elastomers
Some key properties of silicone elastomers that have made them popular for various applications include:

Temperature Resistance
- Silicone elastomers have excellent heat resistance and can withstand continuous temperatures ranging from -80°C to 250°C. Their properties remain largely unchanged over this wide temperature range.

Weatherability
- They are highly resistant to weathering from ultraviolet light, ozone, moisture and temperature extremes. This makes them suitable for applications exposed to outdoor conditions.

Electrical Insulation
- Silicone Elastomers are excellent electrical insulators. They have very high volume resistivity and can be used for insulation in applications handling high voltages.

Biocompatibility and Medical Grade
- Medical grade silicones are non-toxic and hypoallergenic. They can be safely implanted in the body or used for applications involving contact with skin, wounds etc.

Flexibility
- Silicone elastomers have low modulus and are highly flexible. They can elongate several times their original length and quickly return to the original size upon release of stress.

Applications of Silicone Elastomers
Given these advantages, silicone elastomers find usage in various industries for applications requiring materials that can withstand harsh environments:

Automotive industry
- Used for seals, gaskets, hoses in engines to withstand heat and oils. Also used in exterior trim parts for durability.

Construction
- Makes an ideal sealant for glazing, sanitary fittings etc due to weather resistance and flexibility.

Electronics
- Used for insulation, potting, encapsulation of circuits due to their electrical properties and thermal resistance.

Medical devices
- Commonly used for parts like tubes, seals, prosthetics due to biocompatibility. Also used for ostomy and wound care products.

Appliances and machinery
- Suitable for seals, gaskets, O-rings, to withstand heat, moisture, vibrations in appliances, hydraulics, pneumatics.

Personal care
- Enters formulation of products like lotions, creams due to hypoallergenic nature and skin compatibility.

Manufacturing Silicone Elastomers
Silicone elastomers are typically manufactured by one of two polymerization methods:

1. Liquid Injection Molding
- In this process, liquid silicone rubber (LSR) formulations are injected into molds and cured with heat to attain the desired shape. It allows mass production of complex parts.

2. Extrusion
- Here the silicone elastomer is extruded or calendered as sheets or profiles which can then be thermoformed or molded. This process is used to manufacture seals, gaskets, cables etc.

The polymerization involves a platinum-catalyzed addition reaction between vinyl-containing polysiloxanes and polyorganosiloxanes to form the elastomer backbone. Fillers and additives can be added before curing to adjust the physical properties as needed for different applications. Proper quality control during processing is important to achieve consistency.

Future of Silicone Elastomers
Silicone elastomers have revolutionized various industries with their unique properties profile. Research is ongoing to expand their usage further:

- Development of new grades with enhanced properties like fire resistance, low temperature flexibility is increasing end-use applications.

- Bio-based silicones utilizing plant-derived raw materials can drive sustainability in manufacturing.

- 3D printing of silicone elastomers holds promise for customized fabrication of complex parts for biomedical applications.

- Surface modification techniques will allow properties like antibacterial effectiveness to be imparted for specific requirements.
