Types of solar collector tubes
There are two main types of evacuated tube solar collectors based on their design-
1. U-shaped collector tubes: These have a U-shaped copper heat absorber coated with selective materials inside a glass tube. As sunlight enters the glass, it strikes the absorber plate absorbing heat which is transferred to the working fluid inside via natural thermosyphon convection currents.
2. Heat pipe collector tubes: These use heat pipe technology to transfer heat efficiently from the absorber plate to the working fluid. The absorber plate heats a sealed capillary tube containing a working fluid like ethanol which evaporates absorbing heat. The vapours rise and condense at the other end of the tube, releasing the latent heat of vaporization and warming the fluid inside. This allows for more efficient heat transfer over longer distances compared to simple thermosyphon tubes.
Advantages of solar collector tubes
Being evacuated tubes, these collectors provide excellent thermal insulation retaining over 90% of absorbed heat compared to 70-80% for flat plate collectors. This makes them 15-20% more efficient.

Applications of solar collector tubes
Due to their higher efficiency and reliability even in cold climates, evacuated tube solar collectors are increasingly used for-
Solar water heating: They can provide up to 80-90% of hot water needs annually in residential, commercial and industrial applications by pre-heating water before feeding it to boilers or heaters. The tubes passively circulate water through insulated tanks.
Solar process heating: Industries use them to provide low-temperature heat of 80-300°C for processes like drying, curing, pasteurization etc. in food, dairy, textiles sectors saving fossil fuel costs.
Solar space heating: Combined with air or hydronic floor heating systems, they provide passive solar heating of buildings lowering energy bills. The evacuated tube designs stay highly efficient even in cold climates.
Solar cookers: Concentrated sunlight from the tubes is used to cook food and pasteurize water in community solar kitchen projects, with some models achieving temperatures over 200°C.
The future of solar collector tubes
With continuous technology innovations, the efficiency and applications of evacuated tube collectors are projected to grow further in the coming decades. New coatings, heat pipes and materials will boost performance. Wider bundled tube designs in building-integrated facets and rooftops will increase uptake in the renewable energy sector. Their plug-and-play operation with lower maintenance than solar PV also makes them attractive for off-grid areas without electricity access.
