FSO operates in the light spectrum which has a much wider bandwidth compared to RF. This allows Free Space Optics Communication systems to provide extremely high data rates in the range of multiple gigabits per second. In comparison, common forms of RF wireless like Wi-Fi can provide speeds up to 1Gbps.
Because light beams travel in straight lines, FSO links require a direct line-of-sight between the transmitter and receiver units. This makes deployment easier as no obstructions can interfere. In contrast, RF signals can go through walls, but speed drops off significantly with distance.
