What is Magnetic Drug Delivery?

Magnetic drug delivery is a novel site-specific drug delivery approach that utilizes magnetism for transportation and localization of drugs. In this technique, drug molecules are encapsulated or conjugated to microscopic magnetic particles, usually composed of iron oxide. These drug-loaded magnetic particles can then be guided to the desired target site, such as a tumor, using an external magnetic field. The magnetic field generates a force on the magnetic particles, causing them to accumulate only in the targeted tissues. This allows significantly higher concentrations of drugs to be delivered to the intended site while reducing systemic distribution.

Working Mechanism

The working principle of magnetic drug delivery involves several steps:

- Drug-magnetic particle formulation: Drug molecules are attached to magnetic particles, usually iron oxide nanoparticles, through various methods like encapsulation, absorption or chemical binding. This forms drug-loaded magnetic micro/nanoparticles.
