- Production switchers: Designed for studio production environments, production switchers offer premium features like multiple bus architectures, downstream keys, multiviewers, and integrated clip stores. They can switch up to dozens of video inputs.

- Master control switchers: Used in master control rooms of broadcast facilities, master control switchers are very robust and reliable. They primarily perform automated switching of programming between broadcast channels.

- Routers: While not technically Broadcast Switchers  video routers allow routing and distribution of multiple sources throughout a facility. They work in conjunction with production and master control switchers.

- Hybrid/converged switchers: Combining functionality of a production switcher and router, hybrid switchers provide flexible routing and scaling for multi-purpose productions.

At their core, all broadcast switchers share common building blocks that allow versatile video mixing and control. Some key elements include:

- Inputs: Broadcast switchers accept diverse video signals from sources like cameras, video servers, graphics systems etc. via SDI, HDMI or other I/O connections.

- Mix/bus architecture: Internal bus structure mixing multiple video and key sources prior to program and preview outputs. Larger switchers have multiple buses.

- Transition controls: Buttons, faders or programmable controls to manually or automatically transition between sources on air (program) and preview monitors.
