Zelda Fan-generated rumors were "Frustrating" for Donkey Kong DesignersWhen Eric Kozlowsky was hired by Retro Studios, it resulted in reports suggesting that Retro Studios was working on an exciting new Zelda game.
The artist previously worked with PlayStation's Uncharted series and for some reason, it led people to connect. But, Kozlowsky and Retro Studios were actually working on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and when the game's release date was announced in the first place, a lot of Zelda gamers blasted it, claiming they were expecting something else. In a brand new interview with Kiwi Talkz, the Kiwi Talkz podcast, Kozlowsky revealed how that rumor caused frustration for the developers.
"Sometimes it's frustrating because it can create false expectations. I believe that was the case when we announced Tropical Freeze. Everyone was thinking 'they're working on a Zelda game and they're working on one Zelda game' however, they were like 'nope!. We've announced Tropical Freeze and it looks incredible and stunning and then people think "oh it's a sequel to Donkey Kong.'
You then realize that people are going on about the Neogaf show or something and you're like , 'oh my well because everyone yeah, believed we were playing the Zelda game. But it's no, it's not what people do.' It's both humorous at times. it, and at other times it can get uncomfortable when it lasts a bit too long," said Kozlowsky.
Kozlowsky's words are a fascinating window into how rumors spread and how this can adversely affect a game's popularity. Although Tropical Freeze might not have been the game many fans had hoped to see revealed the game received a lot reviews upon its launch. It's a bit frustrating to work hard on something, only to have the internet react with disappointment based on untrue rumors.
