Potassium peroxymonosulfate (KHS2O8), commonly known as M-xyl, is a odorless white crystalline solid. Its chemical structure consists of a potassium cation (K+) and a peroxymonosulfate anion (S2O8H-). As an inorganic peroxide, it is a powerful oxidizing agent.
The peroxymonosulfate anion contains one sulfate group and one peroxide group bonded to a central sulfur atom. This gives the compound high oxidation potential. When KHS2O8 decomposes and releases active oxygen, it yields potassium bisulfate (KHSO4) and oxygen gas (O2). The decomposition reaction is exothermic and accelerates at higher temperatures.

It is often used instead of chlorine due to the lower risk of disinfection byproduct formation. When added to water, KHS2O8 rapidly decomposes to generate sulfate radicals (SO4-.) and hydroxide radicals (OH-.). These powerful radicals are highly reactive with bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. They destroy cell walls and membranes, inactivating microorganisms.
Due to its strong oxidation capacity, KHS2O8 is also effective at removing many inorganic and organic contaminants from wastewater. It readily oxidizes heavy metals like iron and manganese into insoluble forms that can be removed through sedimentation. Similarly, it oxidizes various organic compounds like phenols, cyanides, and sulfides, converting them into biodegradable or non-toxic end products. This allows downstream biological treatments to more efficiently remove organic matter.
Usage in Industry and Manufacturing
As a chemical oxidizer, M-xyl finds application across various industry sectors. In pulp and paper processing, it helps bleach and de-ink recycled paper. When combined with acids or alkalis, it acts as a detergent booster and bleaching agent for textiles and laundry. It aids the beneficiation of sulfide ores in mining operations by oxidizing pyrites and releasing valuable minerals.
KHS2O8 also effectively removes sulfur impurities from petroleum products like gasoline and diesel. In the manufacturing industry, it is employed as a sterilizing and sanitizing agent. Its oxidative strength enables bleaching, deodorizing, and brightening in products ranging from soaps, detergents to cosmetics. Food manufacturers use it to treat meat, poultry and seafood prior to packaging, in order to control bacterial loads.
