How To Check The Noise Of The Clutch
The noise from a heavy duty truck clutch can be a little disturbing. Diagnosing them can also be a pain, especially when all you have to deal with is the noise. Still, your ears can tell you a lot about the clutch and drivetrain. So listen carefully and use the information below to try to diagnose your transmission noise.
Diagnosis is the first step in replacement or repair. Start by starting your car. Use the parking brake and put your vehicle in neutral.
Check drive bearings. Do this by keeping the clutch engaged without depressing the clutch pedal. If you hear a growling or rubbing noise, the transmission input shaft bearing is damaged.
Check clutch release bearing. If you notice a chirping sound, press the pedal while the vehicle is still in neutral. If the noise goes away when the pedal is loaded, the problem is the clutch fork and pivot bolt. Check worn parts and replace them. Make sure to apply a small amount of grease to the ball stud/clutch fork interface as needed.
If the noise becomes louder when the pedal is pressed further, the clutch release bearing is broken.
Test the guide bearing. Hit the clutch pedal and hear the squeal. If there is a harsh sound at the same time as the engine speed and the input shaft speed are different, it means that the guide bearing is broken.
Check fork vibration. Gently depress the clutch pedal, and if the noise goes away, it may be a fork vibration problem. This vibration does not occur when the load is released. Check worn parts and replace them. Make sure to apply a small amount of grease to the ball stud/clutch fork interface as needed.
Learn about gear flips. Gear rollover, gear rattle, or gear backlash noise is often associated with lightweight flywheels. This noise occurs when the vehicle is in neutral and idling. It's a quick tap, click, or rattle. Many people compare it to marbles in a jar. This is a normal part of having a lightweight flywheel.
