There are some things that are beyond your control when it comes to your credit report. You may have just moved out of your parents home and won’t have a good report to work with at all because it is not very long. You may have had a medical emergency that meant all of your bills were late and you were able to catch up, but some of the scars are left behind on your credit report. Since landlords like to pull this report, you may worry about whether you will be able to  find a place to call home.

The good news is that there are a few methods you can use to help out with this. If you are really worried about getting into an apartment with your current credit report, then you may need to find someone responsible to be your co-signer. This is going to be someone who has amazing credit, like an older sibling, a parent, or a close friend. Even if you do have a bit of credit to work with, the landlord may like you to have a cosigner when you are a younger renter to provide them with a safety net.

Do not take this kind of request lightly though. The cosigner is legally responsible for the apartment unit and all the rent, just like you are. If you fail to keep current on all of your payments, it is going to cause some serious damage to the cosigners credit as well. The landlord will be able to evict you from the apartment for this and can go after both of you for the missed rent.

Think carefully about asking someone to be a cosigner for you on the apartment. And if they agree to do this, then work extra hard to make all of those payments on time. You do not want to burn a bridge and cause problems because you decided to not pay for your rent. With a cosigner, it hurts more than just you.
