A New Era of Green Aviation
The aviation industry is currently responsible for around 2-3% of global carbon emissions. With air travel predicted to increase significantly in the coming decades, aircraft emissions will continue rising unless new technologies are adopted. One promising solution is the development of zero emission aircraft that produce no direct emissions. Several companies and researchers are now working on various zero emission aircraft concepts and technologies that could revolutionize air travel and significantly reduce its carbon footprint.
Hydrogen Fuel Cells for Aircraft
One of the leading technologies being developed for Zero Emission Aircraft is hydrogen fuel cells. In a fuel cell, hydrogen reacts with oxygen to produce electricity with water and heat as byproducts instead of emissions. Major aircraft manufacturers like Airbus, Boeing and Rolls Royce are exploring hydrogen fuel cell and hybrid electric propulsion systems for commercial aircraft. Some key challenges include finding ways to safely store large quantities of hydrogen onboard and developing lightweight high-power fuel cells and battery systems. However, hydrogen fuel cells could enable electric airliners with flying ranges comparable to current aircraft. Several prototype aircraft show the technical viability of this technology.
Electrifying Small Aircraft and Drones
While zero emission aircraft technology for large commercial jets faces distance and weight challenges, electrifying smaller aircraft and drones is more viable in the near term. Companies like magniX are developing all-electric propulsion systems for seaplanes, aerial taxis and cargo drones. Eviation Aircraft unveiled an all-electric nine-seat commuter airplane called Alice in 2019. Several airlines have placed orders for the aircraft indicating electric flight could work for short routes. Improving battery energy densities will expand the range of electric aircraft and make them suitable for an increasing number of applications like air taxis, cargo transport and agricultural spraying.
