What are Biopharmaceuticals?

Biopharma, also known as biologics, are medicines made from natural sources such as cells and tissues of humans, animals, and microorganisms. Unlike traditional pharmaceuticals that are chemically synthesized, biopharma are complex macromolecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, and complex carbohydrates. Some common types of biopharma include vaccines, blood components, allergenics, somatic cells, gene therapies, tissues, and recombinant therapeutic proteins.

Advances in Recombinant DNA Technology

The advent of recombinant DNA technology in the 1970s enabled scientists to isolate and manipulate genes from different species and transfer them into microorganisms or animal cells to mass produce biopharmaceutical proteins. This breakthrough opened new possibilities for developing biologics to treat various diseases. Monoclonal antibodies, cytokines, growth factors, and coagulation factors are some widely used recombinant biopharmaceutical proteins today. Biopharmaceuticals Advancements in cell culture and fermentation techniques further aided the large-scale manufacturing of these complex therapeutic molecules in a more controlled and consistent manner.

Wide Therapeutic Applications

Due to their high target specificity and minimal side effects compared to small molecule drugs, biopharma are being increasingly used for the treatment and management of various life-threatening diseases such as cancer, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, infectious diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and genetic disorders. For example, monoclonal antibodies such as Rituximab and Trastuzumab are effective treatments for specific cancers, while erythropoietin and insulin are essential biologics used in the treatment of anemia and diabetes, respectively. Biopharma can even be designed to address disease conditions that were previously considered untreatable. The development of gene therapy and engineered cellular therapies hold promise for curing genetic disorders and other serious medical conditions.
