Recycled Metal An Environmentally Friendly and Cost-Effective Source
Introduction
With the ever-increasing demand for metals across various industries and rapid urbanization and industrialization activities, extracting new metals from mines has put tremendous pressure on the environment and natural resources. Recycling scrap and waste metals provides an eco-friendly alternative to meeting this growing demand while conserving resources. Let's take a detailed look at some key aspects of recycled metal.
Collection and Sorting of Scrap Metal
The first step in the Recycled Metal process involves collecting scrap metal from various sources such as end-of-life products, obsolete equipment and machinery, construction and demolition debris, manufacturing waste etc. This scrap is then sorted based on the type of metal such as ferrous metals (containing iron), non-ferrous metals (aluminum, copper, lead, zinc etc.), and alloys. During sorting, unwanted contaminants like plastics, wood, and hazards need to be removed to ensure quality.
Processing Recycled Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals
Ferrous scrap like steel and iron undergo shredding and size reduction followed by processes like sorting, separation using magnets, and removal of impurities in large hammering machines. Non-ferrous metals require different treatments depending on the type - aluminum is melted for recycling while copper, lead, and zinc undergo pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical processes to recover pure metals. Precious metal scrap also undergoes specialized recovery techniques. These processing steps transform mixed scrap into uniform, product-ready recycled metal.
Production of Secondary Metals
The processed scrap is then fed into steel mills and foundries as a substitute for virgin raw materials to produce new secondary metal products. For ferrous metals, electric arc furnaces or basic oxygen furnaces are used for melting and refining recycled steel into new steel products. Non-ferrous foundries cast molten aluminum, copper, lead and their alloys from recycled raw materials. Some valuable metals like gold and silver can be reclaimed with 99% purity through refining.
