Need for organized plastic waste management
The widespread use of plastics has made plastic waste one of the major components of municipal solid waste. Unscientific burning of plastic releases toxic fumes into the air. Plastic in landfills also releases greenhouse gases like methane further exacerbating global warming. Plastic litters roads, drains, rivers, oceans and other public places making them unsuitable for their intended purpose. Choked drains result in flooding while entry of plastic into water bodies harms aquatic life.
Challenges in plastic waste management
Developing countries face several challenges in managing plastic waste properly. Lack of segregation of waste at source makes post-collection processing difficult. Most urban local bodies lack necessary infrastructure for waste segregation, recycling, and waste-to-energy projects. Unorganized sector dominates plastic waste recycling resulting in unhygienic and harmful recycling practices. Limited availability of recycling technology further affects plastic recycling. Lack of awareness among citizens regarding segregation of waste, use of alternatives to plastic also pose hindrances. Plastic import in the form of finished goods is also rising adding to the waste generation. These challenges must be addressed through co-operation between stakeholders.
