Every soccer player has a playing style or role that’s fundamental to their game.

Finding yours could be the next step of your growth in girls soccer.

We try to explain how young athletes can correlate the skills they have to a suitable role on the field.

1. Experimenting with different roles.

As you’re playing practice or friendly matches, experiment, i.e., play multiple positions.

After experiencing all the roles you will find where you feel most comfortable and effective and that should give you an initial idea.

2. Assessing your strengths.

Next, you should focus on your speed, agility, height, etc. These are factors that will influence your position and suitability.

To give an example, height helps defenders and speed helps wingers.

3. Focus on ball control.

Look at how well you can handle the ball, pass it accurately, shoot, or tackle as these are skills that usually gel well with specific positions.

For example, players who are great at passing might do well in midfield.

4. Understand the game.

Think about how well you understand the game, make choices, and stay aware of what is going on around you.

Some positions, like center back or central midfielder, need strong strategic thinking and leadership.

5. Listen to experts.

Have faith in your coaches, they are the ones spotting talent, and comprehending your strengths and potential.

Coaches might see qualities in you that you haven’t noticed yet and also observe weaknesses you aren’t willing to see.

6. Stay adaptable.

Your playing style may change as you get better and learn new things. You should change your role based on what the team needs and how well you are doing.

You’ll need to follow these steps and be patient (experimentation takes time), and as a young girls soccer player, you can find your niche on the field.

To be more satisfied and perform better, you should find a position and style that matches your strengths.
