What is a Bundle?

A bundle is a platform used for storing and transporting goods and materials. It allows heavy or bulky materials, such as cases of beverage cans or boxes of cereal, to be lifted and moved more easily by forklifts, bundle jacks, or other jacking systems. Bundles enable goods to be shipped, warehoused, and handled more efficiently throughout the supply chain.

Common Bundle Materials and Types

Wood bundles: Wood bundles are the most commonly used type of bundle. They are manufactured using various types of wood such as pine, oak or poplar. Wood bundles can withstand repeated uses and heavy loads, making them suitable for a variety of applications. However, wood bundles are more susceptible to damage from moisture or abrasion compared to other materials.

Plastic bundles: Pallet bundles are manufactured using thermoplastics like high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene. They are highly durable, lightweight, moisture and corrosion resistant. Plastic bundles are more expensive than wood but have a longer lifetime. Common plastic bundle types include rackable, nestable or slip sheets.

Corrugated bundles: Made from 100% recycled corrugated cardboard, corrugated bundles are primarily used for short-term storage and transport of lighter loads within a facility or region. They cannot withstand heavy or frequent use like wood or plastic bundles.

Metal bundles: Metal Pallet are constructed using galvanized or stainless steel. They are extremely durable and can withstand harsh environments and heavy loads over many years. However, they are costly and heavier than other bundle materials. Metal bundles are suitable for specialized applications like exports.

Role of Bundles in Supply Chain Operations

Storage and inventory management: Bundles allow efficient storage of goods in warehouses and distribution centers by optimizing floor space. Standard bundle sizes ensure compatibility with racking and shelving systems for versatile storage configurations.

Material handling: Bundles enable smooth transportation of goods within facilities and between nodes in the supply chain using lift trucks, conveyors and automated guided vehicles. Their uniform dimensions streamline material flows.

Shipping and transport: Pallet consolidate and secure goods for transportation in trucks, trains, ships and planes. Standard bundle sizes and load limits aid interoperability across modes. Goods can be efficiently loaded, transported and unloaded.

Export packaging: Export-strength wooden bundles constructed as per ISPM-15 requirements provide an ideal platform to unitize export cargo for overseas shipment. They maintain packaging integrity during long-distance containerized transportation.

Returns and reuse: Loaded bundles can be returned from customer sites to the origin of supply. Standardized bundle sizes allow for economy of scale in collection, refurbishment and reintroduction into circulation. This closes the loop in bundle management.
