Feller bunchers are specialized tree harvesting machines used in forestry for clearcutting large areas quickly and efficiently. As the name implies, it has two primary functions — it fells trees by cutting them down and then it gathers or “bunches” the cut trees together to be extracted from the harvest area.

How Does a They Work?
A feller buncher is a self-propelled machine that typically operates on tracks or wheels. At the front is a rotating feller head equipped with powerful hydraulic shears or saws. An operator sits in an enclosed cabin and uses joysticks to maneuver the machine and control the feller head. Using precision controls, the operator is able to fully fell trees with the shears in a single cutting motion.

Once felled, a grapple arm on the machine collects and lifts the cut trees. The grapple can hold multiple trees at once and has enough power to manipulate large logs. An articulating boom positions the grapple to efficiently gather trees into piles or bunches for extraction. Sometimes termed “bunched stems,” these piles of cut trees are left strategically in the harvest area for skidders or forwarders to collect and transport to roads for further transport.

Key Components and Mechanisms
In addition to the feller head and grapple arm, other important components of a Feller Buncher include:

- An automated sawing/cutting head equipped with high-powered saw bars, shears, or reciprocating blades for felling trees in one cut. More advanced models have computerized controls for precision tree fellings.

- A lifting boom system with multiple articulation points to position the grapple arm and manipulate heavy cut logs. Booms are reinforced with heavy-duty cylinders and linkages.

- A powerful engine (typically 300hp or more) along with a hydrostatic drive system to provide torque to the saws/shears and hydraulic mechanisms.

- An enclosed pressurized cabin with advanced controls including joystick levers, push buttons, and monitors to give the operator full control and visibility of harvest operations. Cabins have HVAC and suspension seating for operator comfort.

- An large carrier frame and undercarriage with either rubber tracks or independent four-wheel drive and steering for maximum traction and mobility when working on uneven ground in the forest.

- An optional delimbing saw head and grapple flails can be added to strip branches from cut trees as they are gathered into bunches. This reduces debris in extraction areas.
