Instagram ads are notorious for catching our attention with their alluring images and tempting products. If you're like me, you've probably been captivated by the beautiful floral print tiles from Your Tiles (Jardin Rose). However, without a pressing need for tiles at the moment, I turned to my Cricut machine to breathe new life into my IKEA Bekväm stool. In this blog post, I'll share how I accomplished this stunning Cricut x IKEA hack, and provide a link to my Design Space project so you can create your own version. This project is one of my all-time favorites, and I'm excited to walk you through it!
Cricut x IKEA Bekväm Hack: What You’ll Need
This isn't a tutorial on the nitty-gritty of vinyl application, but rather an overview of the materials and techniques I used to achieve this eye-catching design. If you're ready to dive into your own Cricut x IKEA project, here's what you'll need.
Materials and Design
The design I selected is available in Cricut Design Space for just £0.89, or you can access it for free if you have a Cricut Access subscription. The design is versatile and can be adapted to fit the dimensions of the Bekväm stool or any other surface you wish to decorate.
You can use my Design Space project as-is by following the link to my profile here. The design features a tiled effect that I grouped together and resized to fit the surface of the stool. While I used Cricut’s Smart Vinyl for this project, you can easily substitute it with their regular vinyl range if your machine doesn’t cut Smart Vinyl. The only color not available in the regular range is ‘Ocean,’ but a Medium Blue makes a close match.
Construction Tips: Patience is Key
This project is intricate and will require some patience. The design includes delicate pieces that can be challenging to work with, especially if you're new to Cricut. To make the process more manageable, I recommend breaking the project down color by color. This approach helped me maintain my sanity and ensure that I didn’t lose any small pieces.
To start, cut the Ocean and Aqua pieces as they are. Apply the Ocean layer first, as it serves as the foundation for the rest of the design. By starting with the main framework, you’ll find it easier to line up the remaining decals accurately.
Once the vinyl is applied, I sealed the project with a clear sealant. You could use something like the Rust-Oleum Clear Sealer or spray. Just make sure you follow the instructions carefully and allow the sealant to cure according to the directions. Keep in mind that some sealants may yellow over time, so it’s worth researching the best option for your project.
Alternative Approach: Painting with a Stencil
If the idea of weeding and applying all that vinyl seems daunting, there’s another way to achieve a similar look. You can use your Cricut to cut out a stencil of the design and then paint it on using your chosen colors. This method can save time and offer a different aesthetic, while still allowing you to personalize your stool.
The Finished Product: Worth the Effort?
Although this project took more time than any of my previous Cricut creations, the end result was more than worth it. The stool is now a statement piece that brings me immense satisfaction every time I see it. The intricate design and vibrant colors make it a standout item in my home, and it’s a constant reminder of the creativity and craftsmanship I put into it.
The response from my Instagram followers has been overwhelmingly positive. Many commented that they now feel inspired to invest in a Cricut machine themselves. It’s gratifying to see that my project resonated with so many people and sparked their own creative ideas.
Final Thoughts: Should You DIY or Buy?
So, was this project worth the effort, or would it have been easier to simply buy some tiles? For me, the answer is clear: the joy and sense of accomplishment that come from creating something with your own hands are unmatched. While buying tiles might have been quicker, the personal touch and customization that a DIY project offers are priceless.
If you haven’t yet explored the world of Cricut, what’s stopping you?
