How does a Budesonide Inhaler work?
When inhaled through the mouth using the inhaler device, tiny particles of budesonide are deposited deep within the lungs. The inhaled corticosteroid then reduces inflammation and swelling of the airways by binding to glucocorticoid receptors located in the lungs. This helps relax the muscles around the airways and decreases mucus production, allowing asthma symptoms to be better controlled. Budesonide begins to work relatively quickly within 30 minutes to an hour after inhaling a dose. However, it may take a few days of regular use to gain the full anti-inflammatory effects.
Common Types
There are a few different types available by prescription:
- Pulmicort Flexhaler - Budesonide Inhaler is a dry powder inhaler device that contains budesonide. You breathe in forcefully through the mouthpiece to release the medication.
- Pulmicort Respules - These are small vials that contain liquid budesonide formulation. They are used with a nebulizer machine to convert the liquid into a mist that can be inhaled.
- Symbicort - A combination inhaled medication containing both budesonide and formoterol, a long-acting bronchodilator. It comes in a metered dose inhaler device.
- Generic budesonide inhalers - Various generic formulations are available from manufacturers as alternatives to branded Pulmicort.
How to use a Budesonide Inhaler properly
It's important to use your inhaler correctly in order to ensure the full dose of medication reaches your lungs. Here are the basic steps:
1. Remove the cap and shake the inhaler well before each use.
2. Breath out fully before putting the inhaler in your mouth.
3. Place the mouthpiece between your teeth without biting and form a good seal with your lips.
4. Breathe in rapidly and deeply through your mouth. Hold your breath for about 10 seconds to allow the medicine to settle in your lungs.
5. Replace the cap after each use. Rinse your mouth with water after inhaling if needed.
