Types of Water Filters

There are several main types of home Water Filters to choose from. The technology used and contaminants removed vary between options.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) Systems: One of the most effective types for removing a wide range of contaminants like heavy metals, minerals, viruses and bacteria. Works by forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane that traps unwanted particles. Produces the cleanest water but wastes a lot of water in the process.

Carbon Filtration Systems: A common and affordable option. Water is passed through activated carbon filters that absorb chlorine, odors, and some chemicals. Not as effective as RO for removing all contaminants. Filters need to be replaced periodically.

UV Filtration Systems: Water Purifier Use ultraviolet (UV) light to alter the DNA of microorganisms like bacteria and viruses, killing them. Effective against pathogens but does not remove chemicals or heavy metals. Replacement UV bulbs needed.

Distillation Systems: Boils water and collects and condenses the vapor into clean distilled water. Very effective at removing contaminants including heavy metals and salt. Energy intensive process so units can be slow and costly to operate.
