The '2024 HOPE CUP', a soccer tournament hosted by Hope Friends, an international relief and development organization, to help children from sponsored countries discover their potential and nurture their dreams, will open on the 8th.

On the 2nd, the Korea Food for the Hungry held a media day event at the Korea House in Jung-gu, Seoul and explained the significance of this year's competition, which is being held again after 6 years, and the children who participated.

The slogan for this year's competition is 'Our hopes become reality'. It also contains the intention to support all children participating in the competition to realize their dreams and hopes.

The Hope Cup is a competition held every two years by the Korea Food for the Hungry International. The first competition was held in 2016 under the name of the Hope World Cup, and the name was changed to the Hope Cup in 2018.

After that, it was not opened for a while due to COVID-19.

Malawi won in 2016 and Bolivia won in 2018.

This year, the event was hosted by Lee Su-in, CEO of SI Company. CEO Lee, who has been consistently involved in helping children and youth, began donating to hunger relief efforts this year, and this is how the event began.

A total of 120 male and female athletes from 10 countries, including Korea, Guatemala, Ecuador, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam, will participate in the competition.

The Korean team, led by coach Moon Sa-jin, is also challenging for the championship. The Korean team is made up of children from multicultural backgrounds, including children of ethnic Koreans living in Korea.

Choi Chang-nam, chairman of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of the Disabled, emphasized, “If children from multicultural families are not able to grow up properly, other problems may arise in our society later on,” and “We must support youth from immigrant backgrounds so that they can adapt well to society.”

The opening ceremony will be held at Jangchung Gymnasium in Jung-gu, Seoul on the 8th. The preliminary rounds will be held on the 10th and 11th at the Seoul World Cup Stadium Auxiliary Stadium in Mapo-gu, and the five-day schedule will conclude with the 3rd/4th place match and final on the 12th.

Chairman Choi Chang-nam said, “There are still children who have the potential to become fruitful and are waiting for help,” and added, “I hope that the children will have greater hopes and dreams and grow into leaders who will change the world.”

Park Moon-sung, a soccer commentator and honorary chairman of the Hope Cup, said, "I visited Sri Lanka last April and met with children from slums," and added, "A small gesture of concern that can be a precious ray of hope to someone can be the start of a big change."

Ecuadorian team captain David (16) said, "When I first got my passport and came to Korea, everything was new and exciting," and expressed his aspirations by saying, "I feel like my dream has come true, so I am grateful. I will do my best and play a match without regrets.
