What is Geothermal Power?
Geothermicly generation utilizes heat from within the earth as a renewable energy source for electricity production and direct use applications. The core of the earth is extremely hot, around 4000–7000°C. This heat travels towards the outer layers of the earth including the crust which consists of hot rocks and water. Geothermicly plants take advantage of this natural heat flow by using it to power turbines and generate electricity. Some areas of the world are better suited for geothermicly due to higher underground temperatures and accessible underground water resources.
The Inner Workings of a Geothermal Power
A typical Geothermal Power plant has three main components - the production well, the power block and the injection well. Hot water or steam from underground reservoirs is extracted through production wells drilled 500-4000 meters deep. This high temperature and high-pressure resource is piped to the power block above ground. In the power block, the geothermal fluid spins turbines connected to generators which produce electricity. After passing through the turbines, the geothermal fluid which still contains significant heat potential is injected back into the hot reservoir through injection wells to be stored for future use. The reservoir is thus recharged in a sustainable closed loop system.
