Vaping has come under increasing fire over the last few years, with increasing demonisation from the media leading to widespread public mistrust and fear.

In response, the government has put forward a series of controversial proposals, including a ban on disposable e-cigarettes, a ban on flavored e-cigarettes, and even plans to impose the same high taxes on e-cigarette products as traditional tobacco.

Despite this, the UK's National Health Service (NHS) considers e-cigarettes to be the most effective smoking cessation tool and officially recommends them to all smokers as a "significantly reduced harm" alternative.

Ironically, the government itself has worked to clear up some misconceptions about e-cigarettes, pointing out that they do not contain tar, pose no secondhand smoke risk, and do not lead to youth smoking.

The main concern for the e-cigarette industry stems from the increase in the number of teenagers using e-cigarettes. We fully acknowledge that this is a problem, but we believe that restricting the choices of adult quitters is not the answer, especially as other industries remain unchecked.

An obvious example is the energy drink industry. Energy drinks pose multiple risks to young people, and their popularity continues to rise. However, they have not received the same level of scrutiny or condemnation as e-cigarettes.

We contrasted the two industries to highlight some of the contradictions.

The Health Impact of Energy Drinks VS Vaping

The Health Impact of Energy Drinks

Due to marketing strategies and dubious claims about energy drinks' ability to boost physical and cognitive abilities, consumption of energy drinks has reached unprecedented levels among young people.

But what are the real health effects of consuming a lot of energy drinks?

Frequent consumption of energy drinks may have a number of negative health effects, including:

hypertension

obesity

Type 2 diabetes

epilepsy

apoplexy

Kidney stone

Nausea and upset stomach

Tooth erosion

Stress and anxiety

Sleep disorder

Aggressive behavior

Although some drinks emphasize their vitamin and mineral content, the main ingredients of energy drinks are actually large amounts of sugar and caffeine.

A typical can of cacao contains about 200 mg of caffeine, the equivalent of two strong cups of coffee, and up to 20 teaspoons (78 grams) of sugar, more than three times the maximum daily intake for an adult.

The Health Impact of Vaping

E-cigarettes are often exaggerated in the media, leading to many misunderstandings among the public about their health risks. Although we never recommend e-cigarettes to non-smokers, we do believe they can be used as a healthy alternative to smoking.

According to the NHS report, e-cigarettes are 95% less harmful than traditional cigarettes. E-cigarettes do not pose a significant risk of secondhand smoke and are considered the most effective smoking cessation AIDS. The use of e-cigarettes does not produce tar or carbon monoxide. Widely feared health complications, such as popcorn lung, are actually caused by banned substances such as diacetyl, which is not found in TPD-compliant CN e-liquids.

Often, when you hear reports about negative incidents, it's often because people are buying illegal, unregulated, disposable e-cigarettes from street stores. If you avoid buying these black market products, you can avoid the associated problems.

The main health effects of e-cigarettes are side effects due to excessive use, including headaches, cough, sore throat and nausea. These problems can be quickly alleviated simply by reducing usage. Although e-cigarettes have been around for 20 years, there is no evidence to date that they cause cancer.

Marketing of energy drinks and Vaping

Energy Drink Marketing

The target market for energy drinks is mainly young people and people who love sports and fitness. This conclusion can be easily drawn by looking at several well-known brands in the current market.

Often promoted by influencers on social platforms such as YouTube, or even launched by them themselves, the drinks quickly won over young audiences and took the US, UK and global markets by storm.

Once these fruit-flavored drinks are hyped enough to attract impressionable young consumers, they employ some clever marketing tactics, such as creating the illusion that demand is in short supply. By deliberately restricting supply, energy drinks become difficult to obtain, thus boosting their fashion status.

The effect of these marketing campaigns is obvious. According to a study by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), while only 30% of adults consume energy drinks, a staggering 68% of teenagers (aged 10-18) consume them regularly.

Even more worryingly, up to 18% of children (3-10 years old) are also consuming energy drinks, with an average consumption of around 0.95 litres per week. As the popularity of energy drinks increases year by year, these numbers are expected to worsen.

Vaping Marketing

E-cigarettes are often criticized by the media, claiming that they attract young people through bright colors and attractive candy flavors. However, this is not the case.

Unlike energy drinks, e-cigarette products are strictly and reasonably regulated, meaning they cannot be sold to anyone under the age of 18. All e-cigarette products must follow strict government marketing regulations and therefore cannot be advertised on television, in newspapers, magazines, on social media or in text messages.

E-cigarette products can only be displayed as such on the seller's own website or packaging, which means they can only advertise to consumers over the age of 18 who are actively looking for their products. The relevant warnings must be clearly displayed on the packaging of all e-cigarette products so that consumers understand the potential risks.

Although certain e-cigarette products are promoted with bright colors and delicious flavors, this is not a strategy aimed at minors. This is simply a response to demand from the adult market, which generally prefers delicious and appealing products.

E-cigarettes may be becoming a popular alternative for young smokers, but given their ability to help these people avoid the health risks of smoking, we think that's not such a bad thing.

Our Stance

At DeonVape, we firmly believe that it is vital that all products are sold in a responsible manner to adults aged 21 and over.

While e-cigarettes are often blamed as a threat to youth health, it seems extremely unfair that other potentially harmful industries are still actively marketing e-cigarettes to minors.

Much of the concern about youth e-cigarette use stems from black market vendors flouting regulations designed to protect young people.

We advocate responsible marketing of e-cigarettes and take additional steps to ensure that e-cigarettes continue to be a healthy smoking alternative for adults.

Requiring shops to obtain a licence to sell e-cigarettes, increasing Trading Standards' budget to carry out more frequent checks, ensuring merchants comply with TPD laws, and strengthening border checks to prevent illegal single-use e-cigarettes from entering the market are all effective ways to ensure responsible sales without harming the industry and its users.

Banning flavored e-cigarettes or raising the price of e-cigarettes will only make smoking more attractive, thus negating the significant progress made in recent years.
