The roots of A Program in Miracles can be traced back again to the collaboration between two people, Helen Schucman and William Thetford, equally of whom were distinguished psychologists and researchers. The course's inception happened in the first 1960s when Schucman, who was simply a clinical and study psychiatrist at Columbia University's University of Physicians and Surgeons, started to experience some inner dictations. She described these dictations as originating from an internal style that determined it self as Jesus Christ. Schucman originally resisted these activities, but with Thetford's inspiration, she began transcribing the communications she received.
Around a period of eight years, Schucman transcribed what can become A Program in Miracles, amounting to three quantities: the Text, the Book for Pupils, and the Information for Teachers. The Text lays out the theoretical base of the program, elaborating on the primary concepts and principles. The Workbook for Pupils includes 365 classes, one for every single day of the year, developed to guide the reader through a daily training of applying the course's teachings. The Information for Teachers provides further guidance on how to realize and show the concepts of A Program in Miracles to others.
One of the central themes of A Program in Miracles is the notion of forgiveness. The program shows that correct forgiveness is the important thing to inner peace and awareness to one's heavenly nature.
