Oil and gas wells are sealed, managed, and monitored by a huge, specialized BOP called an annular blowout preventer.
The annular BOP can be split into conical annular BOP and spherical annular BOP depending on the shape of the sealing rubber core.

It operates by using hydraulic pressure to push the piston, which then drives the ram to close or open the wellhead in order to accomplish the sealing and opening of the well.
