The Evolution of Body Armor and Modern Day Tactical Vests
Body armor has evolved significantly over the years from simple leather and metal breastplates to modern lightweight tactical vests. The purpose has always remained the same - to protect the wearer from physical harm, especially from weapon attacks. Some of the earliest forms of protective gear date back to ancient civilizations like the Greeks and Romans who wore layers of toughened leather and metal plates for infantry soldiers.
Development of Modern Materials
Military Tactical Vest was not until the 20th century when new materials like plastics, synthetic polymers and lightweight ceramics emerged that body armor truly began to transform. During World War 1 and 2, militaries experimented with primitive bulletproof vests made of layered silk, cotton and fiberglass that provided some protection but were bulky and uncomfortable. The Korean War in 1950s saw the introduction of early ballistic nylon vests that used layers of the material to distribute and absorb bullet impacts. However, these initial nylon models were still quite heavy at over 20 lbs.
