Yeast infection, also known as candidiasis, is a common fungal infection that affects both men and women. It is caused by an overgrowth of yeast called Candida albicans, which is naturally present in the body but can multiply rapidly when the balance of bacteria and yeast in the body is disrupted. Yeast infections can occur anywhere on the skin or mucous membranes, such as in the mouth, throat, genitals, and gut.
One of the most common symptoms of yeast infection is itching or burning around the affected area. Other symptoms may include redness or swelling, soreness during sex or urination for women with vaginal infections. Some people may also experience thick white discharge from their genitals. These symptoms are usually mild to moderate and can be treated with over-the-counter antifungal medications.
